How to Receive Twilio SMS Replies in Alta

This guide explains how to configure your Twilio number so SMS replies are received directly in the Alta Inbox.

Important Note: Before setting up SMS in Alta, please ensure your Twilio account is approved for SMS sending. Without Twilio approval, SMS messages will not be delivered.

Part 1: Connect Twilio to Alta

Before setting up SMS replies, make sure your Twilio account is connected.

Step 1: Connect Twilio

  1. Go to Alta → Settings → Integrations.

  2. Locate the Twilio section.

  3. Click Connect.

  4. Paste your:

    • Account SID

    • Auth Token
      (You can find both inside your Twilio console.)

  5. Click Connect.

Your Twilio account is now connected to Alta.


Part 2: Configure SMS Webhook (Required to Receive Replies)

To receive SMS replies inside Alta, you must configure the webhook on each Twilio phone number.


Step 1: Copy the SMS Webhook URL from Alta

  1. Go to Alta → Settings → Integrations.

  2. Locate the Twilio section and click Customize.

  3. Click “Click to show webhook URL”.

  4. Copy the SMS Webhook Key.

Keep this URL ready — you will paste it into Twilio.


Step 2: Configure the Webhook in Twilio

  1. Log in to your Twilio account.

  2. Go to Phone Numbers → Manage → Active Numbers.

  3. Click on the phone number you are using to send SMS.

You will now see the phone number configuration page.

  1. Scroll down to Messaging Configuration.

  2. Locate the section:

    • “A message comes in”

  3. Make sure it is set to:

    • Webhook

  4. Paste the SMS Webhook URL you copied from Alta into the URL field.

  5. Click Save configuration.

Important:
If you are using multiple Twilio numbers to send SMS, you must repeat this configuration for each number.


Part 3: Configure the Error Webhook (Required Step)

This ensures proper logging and prevents webhook conflicts.

Step 1: Configure Error Webhook

  1. In Twilio, go to Monitor.

  2. Open the Logs tab.

  3. Click Errors.

  4. Click Webhook.

  5. Click Discard Changes.

  6. Return to Alta.

  7. Copy the Error Webhook Key.

  8. Go back to the Twilio page.

  9. Paste the Error Webhook URL into the webhook URL field.

  10. Click Save.


Final Result

Once completed:

  • SMS replies sent to your Twilio number will appear inside the Alta Inbox.

  • You can manage reply directly from Alta.

  • All configured numbers will route replies correctly.
