Summary: The Funnel visualization in Alta's Data Explorer turns a set of measures into a step-by-step conversion chart — for example Leads → MQLs → Opportunities → Closed Won — with a conversion percentage shown under every step.
Who this is for: Anyone who tracks a multi-stage process (sales pipeline, onboarding, campaign engagement) and wants to see drop-off between stages at a glance.
Before you start
You'll need at least two measures in your data model — each measure becomes one funnel step. If you're new to the chart builder, start with How to Build a Chart with the Data Explorer in Alta.
Build your funnel
Open the Data Explorer from the sidebar (Explore → Data Explorer) and choose your data model or metric.
In the visualization picker, select Funnel — you'll find it in the Flow group.
Under Measures, add one measure for each stage of your funnel. Each measure you add becomes a step in the chart.
Open the Steps section — it shows a numbered list of your steps. Drag a step by its handle to reorder it. The funnel draws steps in exactly this order, so put your widest stage first.
To rename a step, click the step's series under Measures and set a Display name. The new name appears in the chart label.
Open the Stacking section and pick a Chart type: Bar (horizontal) or Column (vertical).
To control how values are displayed (for example currency or thousands separators), open the settings on the Measures field and set the Value format.
Fine-tune with the remaining sections if you need them: Sort & Limit, Drilldown (click a funnel bar to see the underlying records), and Advanced settings.
Save the chart to a dashboard, and you're done.
How to read the chart
Each step shows its value inside the bar and a conversion percentage under the step label.
The percentage is calculated against the largest step in the funnel (usually your first stage) — not against the previous step. If Leads = 1,000 and Opportunities = 150, Opportunities shows 15.00% regardless of the stages in between.
Bars are shaded automatically from light to dark purple based on value, so bigger stages stand out.
Tips and common pitfalls
Use aggregate measures, not dimensions. The funnel reads one summary row of results — each step is a single total. Dimensions (grouping fields) aren't available for this chart type. If you want a funnel per segment, create a separate chart per segment or use a filter.
Empty chart? If your query returns no rows, the funnel renders blank. Check your filters and date range.
Two steps with the same name are fine — labels are kept distinct behind the scenes, so renaming steps to matching display names won't break the chart.
Order matters visually only. Reordering steps changes how the funnel is drawn but never changes the underlying values — so double-check that your step order matches your real-world process.
