How to Call a Prospect from Alta with the Built-In Dialer

Make live, human phone calls to prospects directly from your browser with Alta's built-in dialer — pick your caller ID, talk, and have the call logged automatically.

Written by Katie Supporté

Summary: Alta's built-in dialer lets you call a prospect directly from your browser — no desk phone or external calling app needed — and logs the call automatically on the prospect's record.

Who this is for: Reps and account owners who want to jump on a live, human call with a prospect, alongside Katie's automated AI calls.

Before you start

  • The dialer must be enabled for your account. If you don't see a Call button next to prospect phone numbers, it isn't turned on for your plan yet — reach out to us in the chat and we'll help.

  • Your account needs a connected Twilio voice integration and at least one phone number with Voice capability. Without a voice-capable number, the Call button won't appear.

  • Use a browser with microphone access. The first time you place a call, your browser will ask for permission to use the mic — click Allow.

Placing a call

  1. Open a campaign and go to the Prospects tab, then click a prospect to open their details panel.

  2. Find the phone section. If no number is shown yet, click Get number. Alta looks up the prospect's phone numbers — this may take several seconds — and shows up to 3 numbers. If none can be found, you'll see Not Found.

  3. Click the Call button next to the number you want to dial.

  4. A Call from menu opens listing your voice-capable phone numbers (with their names, if set). Pick the number you want the prospect to see as your caller ID.

  5. The first call in a session takes a moment to set up — you may briefly see Preparing the dialer.... The call then starts automatically.

  6. A call widget appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen. It shows the number you're dialing and Connecting…, then switches to a live duration timer once the prospect answers.

  7. During the call, use the microphone button to mute or unmute yourself, and click Hang up to end the call.

What happens after the call

The call is recorded automatically in your Calls history as an outbound call, linked to the prospect. It's marked Completed if the prospect answered, or Failed if they didn't, along with the call duration. Dialer calls are live human conversations, so unlike Katie's AI calls they don't include an AI transcript.

Tips and common pitfalls

  • One call at a time. While a call is active, the Call button is disabled and shows Finish the current call first.

  • Duration starts at answer. The timer (and the logged duration) counts from the moment the prospect picks up, not from when you start dialing.

  • "Dialer unavailable"? If registration fails, a Dialer unavailable notice appears in the bottom-right with the error and a Retry button. Click Retry; if it keeps failing, check your Twilio voice integration and phone numbers.

  • No Call button? Make sure your account has at least one phone number with Voice capability and that the dialer is enabled for your plan.
