How to Use the Command Bar in Alta (Cmd+K)

Jump anywhere, search anything, and create campaigns, assistants, metrics, or dashboards without leaving the keyboard.

Written by Katie Supporté

Summary

The command bar is Alta's keyboard-first launcher. Hit Cmd+K (or Ctrl+K on Windows) anywhere in the app to search, jump to a page, or kick off a quick action like creating a campaign or metric.

Who this is for

Anyone who'd rather type than click. Power users, sellers moving fast between accounts, ops folks bouncing between dashboards.

Before you start

Nothing to install. The command bar is available on every page of Alta and respects what your account has access to.

Step 1: Open the command bar

Press Cmd+K on Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows from any page. A search dialog opens in the center of the screen with the placeholder Search....

Step 2: Type what you're looking for

Start typing — results stream in as you go. You'll see grouped sections like recent items, search hits, and Quick actions.

Step 3: Filter by group

Pill-shaped filters appear below the search input. The default is All; click a pill (each shows a count) to scope results to that group. Hit All again to reset.

Step 4: Pick a result

Use the arrow keys to highlight a row and press Enter to open it, or click with the mouse. Recent picks bubble up next time you open the bar in a Recent searches section.

Step 5: Use a quick action

Quick actions show up at the bottom of the results. Depending on your workspace they include:

  • Add Campaign

  • Add Assistant

  • Add Metric

  • Add Dashboard

Type a few characters that match the action name (e.g. "camp") to surface it, then press Enter. Some quick actions open a follow-up scope view (for example, pick which workspace or model to attach the new object to) right inside the command bar — fill it in and the new object is created.

Step 6: Power-user keyboard shortcuts

Each quick action also has its own dedicated shortcut combo (Cmd + the action letter, e.g. Cmd+Shift+C for a campaign — exact letters depend on your account). Press the combo from anywhere in Alta and you skip straight to the action, no need to open the command bar first.

Tips and common pitfalls

  • Cmd+K is the magic key. If nothing happens, click anywhere on the page first to make sure Alta has focus, then try again.

  • Empty results screen? The bar shows "No results found — Please try different keywords or check for possible typos" — try a shorter word or a different spelling.

  • Quick actions don't always show. They're filtered by your current product/workspace, so an action you saw yesterday in one workspace may not appear in another.

  • Closing the bar. Press Esc, click outside the dialog, or hit Cmd+K again to dismiss.

  • Recent searches only appear when the All filter is active — switching to a group filter hides them so you can focus on that group.

  • Use it instead of menus. If you can name the thing you want, Cmd+K is almost always faster than clicking through navigation.
